This Mongolian Gobi Tour takes you through Mongolia’s iconic landscapes, combining vast steppes, dramatic rock formations, endless deserts, and ancient cultural sites. Starting in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, you will travel south into the Gobi Desert to explore some of its greatest wonders—Yol Valley, Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs), and the Khongor Sand Dunes.

Along the way, you will encounter nomadic families, learn about camel herding traditions, and enjoy authentic overnight stays in Mongolian ger camps. Beyond the Gobi, the journey continues north to the ruins of Ongiin Khiid Monastery and the ancient capital Karakorum, home to Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery.

This route combines natural wonders, history, and nomadic culture, offering a balanced adventure across Mongolia’s most popular and breathtaking destinations.

Day 1Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

  • Airport pick-up, transfer to hotel.
  • Optional short city tour (Genghis Khan Museum, Zaisan Hill).
  • Welcome dinner.
  • Overnight in hotel (Ulaanbaatar).

Day 2Ulaanbaatar - Baga Gazriin Chuluu (220 km by car)

  • Drive south into Dundgovi Province.
  • Visit the granite rock formations and ruins of an ancient monastery.
  • Picnic lunch en route.
  • Overnight in ger camp (Baga Gazriin Chuluu).

Day 3Baga Gazriin Chuluu - Tsagaan Suvarga (280 km by car)

  • Drive further south through semi-desert steppes.
  • Visit Soum Khukh Burd Temple ruins.
  • Arrive at Tsagaan Suvarga (White Cliffs) – eroded limestone formations glowing red and white at sunset.
  • Overnight in ger camp (Tsagaan Suvarga).

Day 4Tsagaan Suvarga - Yol Valley (280 km by car)

  • Enter the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park.
  • Hike in Yol Valley, known for its dramatic cliffs and ice fields.
  • Overnight in ger camp (near Yol Valley).

Day 5Yol Valley - Khongor Sand Dunes (200 km by car)

  • Scenic drive west.
  • Arrive at Khongor Sand Dunes (Singing Dunes).
  • Camel riding, climbing the dunes, and enjoying desert sunset views.
  • Overnight in ger camp (Khongor Dunes).

Day 6Khongor Sand Dunes - Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs) (150 km by car)

  • Travel to Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs).
  • Explore the famous red sandstone cliffs where dinosaur fossils were discovered.
  • Visit a camel herder family and try a short camel ride.
  • Overnight in ger camp (Bayanzag).

Day 7Bayanzag - Ongiin Khiid (150 km by car)

  • Drive north toward Dundgovi Province.
  • Visit Ongiin Khiid Monastery ruins, once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia.
  • Overnight in ger camp (Ongi River Valley).

Day 8Ongiin Khiid - Kharkhorum (300 km by car)

  • Travel to the ancient capital Kharkhorum.
  • Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery.
  • Explore the Karakorum Museum.
  • Overnight in ger camp (Kharkhorum).

Day 9Kharkhorum - Ulaanbaatar (380 km by car)

  • Return drive across the steppe.
  • Arrive in Ulaanbaatar in the evening.
  • Farewell dinner.
  • Overnight in hotel (Ulaanbaatar).

Day 10Departure

  • Breakfast at hotel.
  • Transfer to airport/train station.
