Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, located in the far west of Mongolia, is home to the country’s highest peaks, massive glaciers, and pristine alpine landscapes. At its heart stands Khüiten Peak 4,374 m the highest point in Mongolia, rising above eternal snow and ice. Travelers will experience the stunning Potanin Glacier, the wild beauty of the Tsagaan River, and the unique Kazakh nomadic culture of Bayan-Ulgii.

This tour combines adventure, culture, and breathtaking scenery: horseback riding and trekking through the Altai mountains, visiting eagle hunters, and exploring the spectacular landscapes where Mongolia, Russia, and China meet.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

  • Pick-up at Chinggis Khaan International Airport.
  • Transfer to hotel.
  • City orientation walk (optional, depending on arrival time).
  • Welcome dinner.
  • Overnight in hotel, Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2Ulaanbaatar - Ulgii (Flight, 1,677 km) - Tsengel soum (86 km by car)

  • Morning flight (3 hrs) to Ulgii city, capital of Bayan-Ulgii province.
  • Lunch in Ulgii and introduction to Kazakh culture.
  • Drive westwards (2 hrs) to Tsengel soum, a picturesque settlement on the banks of the Khovd River.
  • Overnight in ger camp/tented camp by Khovd River.

Day 3Tsengel soum - Tsagaan Gol (White River) valley (100 km by car)

  • Drive deeper into Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.
  • Scenic journey through rugged valleys, snow-capped peaks visible in the distance.
  • Arrive at Tsagaan River (White River), fed by the Altai glaciers.
  • Overnight in tented camp by Tsagaan Gol.

Day 4Tsagaan River - Base Camp (20 km on the horseback)

  • Load equipment onto pack camels/horses.
  • Trek or ride into the heart of the Altai mountains (20 km on the horseback).
  • Arrive at Altai Tavan Bogd base camp (near Potanin Glacier).
  • View of the “Five Holy Peaks” (Khüiten, Malchin, Nairamdal, Bürged, Ulgii).
  • Overnight in tented base camp.

Day 5Altai Tavan Bogd – Glacier Exploration or Malchin Peak Trek

  • Optional full-day trek on the Potanin Glacier or hike up Malchin Peak (4,050 m) — accessible for non-technical climbers.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of Mongolia, Russia, and China.
  • Evening return to base camp.
  • Overnight in tented base camp.

Day 6Base Camp - Tsagaan River (20 km on the horseback)

  • Return ride/trek along the Tsagaan Valley.
  • Meet support vehicles.
  • Relax by the river.
  • Overnight in tented camp by Tsagaan Gol.

Day 7Tsagaan River - Tsengel soum (100 km by car)

  • Drive back through mountain valleys and steppe to Tsengel soum.
  • Rest and enjoy the Kazakh hospitality.
  • Optional evening with eagle hunter family (depending on season).
  • Overnight in Tsengel.

Day 8Tsengel soum - Ulgii (86 km by car) - Ulaanbaatar (flight, 1,677 km)

  • Drive back to Ulgii (2 hrs).
  • City tour: Kazakh National Museum, local bazaar.
  • Afternoon flight to Ulaanbaatar.
  • Transfer to hotel.
  • Overnight in hotel, Ulaanbaatar.



Day 9Departure from Ulaanbaatar

  • Free morning or shopping (cashmere, souvenirs).
  • Transfer to airport.
  • End of tour.
